Sprang: 01 The Very Basic Basics
Before I get into the nitty gritty of the Sprang I was working with at IOLI, it’s probably best for me to give you a bit of a primer on Sprang.
Very basically, Sprang is a warp based form of clothmaking where threads are twisted around each other in alternating plait and over-plait rows. If you’re familiar with Swedish Finger weaving or tablet/card weaving, those are probably the closest techniques to Sprang that I can think of.
What are the basics of how it works?
You set up your warp which has specific requirements: always has an even number of threads, it is worked on a frame, has a specific cross at the top, and is flat (and there are circular and tubular variations)1.
